Support Group Outline

For each support group provide the following information:

Common Victimization Issue (e.g. Non-offending parents/caregivers, adult female victims of sexual assault, adult male victims of child sexual abuse, adult female victims of child sexual abuse)

Complete the following outline or provide your own outline with a session number, topic heading and description of the group session.  Note: The "goal" is where you want the group to get to and the "objective" is how to get there.  Use additional pages as needed. You may attach a copy of your support group outline as long as it has all of the required information.

1. Introduction/ Orientation

Goal: Provide safe environment for participants to open up.

Objective: Introductions of members, intro to group format, development and discussion of ground-rules, topic review, hopes and fears.

2. What is Sexual Assault? SA 101

Goal: Learn definitions and effects of sexual assault.

Objective: Inform & describe definition of SA; discuss how SA impact victims and families; how culture and value system play a role.

3. Triggers, Flashbacks and PTSD

Goal: How to recognize symptoms and triggers, and learn how to respond positively.

Objective: Further educate the participants about triggers, flashbacks and PTSD by having an open discussion; what they mean, what to look for and explore various ways to respond.

4. Fear, Anger, and Coping Skills

Goal: How to express volatile emotions in positive ways.

Objective: Recognize negative impact of fear and anger, and teach participants the skills and techniques.

5. Self-Esteem, Self-Confidence and Body Image

Goal: Increase self-esteem and self-confidence; restore positive body image.

Objective: Explore participants' perception of self & how they have affected their own response.

6. Grief and Shame

Goal: Provide healthy coping skills.

Objective: Encourage participants to express feelings in a safe environment.
